Industry Insight | Creative Disruption: How AIGC Is Remaking the Ad Industry

Unique Research · Insight / industry · May 11, 2023 · Full rewrite — not a stub

“The iPhone made Apple’s tech lead unshakeable for a decade by turning the phone into a mobile smart tool. ChatGPT makes people see AI’s next leap — AIGC may be the next iPhone moment. Big tech is pouring into foundation models to claim a seat.”

01. Ad industry growth under pressure

1.1 Consumption soft → full-year ad market down. Policy: 14th Five-Year Plan market-supervision / info-security rules; Algorithm Regulation limits data + requires user algorithm rights. QuestMobile: 2022 social retail sales ¥43.97T (−0.2 pts) hit ads. China overall ad market −~9.4% in 2022 — first drop in five years.

Yet mobile traffic rebounded (>1.2B users; monthly avg daily time 463.8 min) → internet ads +1.4% to ¥663.9B. Short-video + social capacity up; 2023 expected to restart growth. Five major channels: ¥505.5B (2017) → ¥1,000.8B (2021), CAGR 18.6%. Spend shifting offline → online for data-driven targeting. AIGC / metaverse already in smart ads; ChatGPT accelerates intelligent, usable, interoperable marketing in 2023.

1.2 Internet ads resilient; tilt to “life-circle” channels. Head platforms expand traffic ecosystems + ADX + automated products. In-app conversion exits (e.g. Ocean Engine Qianchuan / DOU+; Kuaishou Magnetic Jinniu / Fentiao) grew fast. QuestMobile 2022 mix: ecommerce 49.4%, short video 17.3%, info 14.6%, social 13.5% — ecommerce + short video expected to keep taking budget. Downstream: CPG + F&B still #1/#2 share (39.42% / 30.60%). >80% brands use ≥5 marketing modes; beauty leans platform seeding + livestream conversion.

1.3 Player margins (illustrative): owned media ~20–50%; agency media ~5–20% (often at/below rebate); creative/design ~20–80%; ad SaaS ~60–90%; events ~15–40%; print/materials ~5–20%. Higher margin ↔ higher risk/cost (talent for creative; traffic CAPEX for media).

02. Tech boom & industry shift

2.1 After PGC/UGC — AIGC enters. Soft consumption → advertisers demand conversion; AIGC commercializes as internal efficiency lever. Stack spans creative gen, asset management, targeting, placement, analytics.

Applications: creative copy/visual variants at scale; placement via brand/product/behavior analysis; real-time data mining for demand + trend. Benefits: shorter cycles; lower labor (CS/design/art); quality consistency; personalization → higher accept/convert rates. Pros free for deeper concept + novel element mixes.

2.5 Near-term labor substitution risk. Kai-Fu Lee’s “10 jobs AI replaces first” (telesales, CS, warehouse, cashiers…). In ads: copy, design, illustrators, even strategy — AI faster and often higher quality. Apr 13: BlueFocus (300058.SZ) internal memo — indefinite halt of outsourcing for creative design, proposal writing, copywriting, and short-term hires to stop “core capability hollowing” and embrace AIGC. Guangzhou mid-size game outsourcer: art team cut ~2/3 after AI since early 2023. Midjourney daily showcase already beats most peer work with precise prompts.

03–04. Opportunity or threat? Outlook

Soft Ads (软告科技) founder Liu Yang: ads / ecommerce / games are largest internet scenes; AIGC on information + interaction can restructure industries — ads have the densest users/data so the “AI flywheel” spins easiest. Content gen velocity → explosion; domestic foundation-model platforms proliferate; SMEs can ship commercial effect via small models or LM fine-tunes on owned media/data/inventory.

Attribuly founder Li Ju: ChatGPT still general — weak private-data binding → hard enterprise workflow embed; ~24k character cap small for corp use; data security for target cohorts matters.

Bottom line: AIGC remakes creative production, placement precision, and ROI optimization loops — the industry’s “iPhone moment” is arriving via tech fission, not a fad.
