Earnings | Baidu 2022: AI-Powered Next-Gen Search as the New Growth Engine

Unique Research · Insight / earnings analysis · June 8, 2023 · Full rewrite — not a stub

On Feb 22, 2023, Baidu (NASDAQ: BIDU / HKEX: 9888) reported FY2022: revenue ¥123.68B; Baidu AI Cloud ¥17.7B (+23%); non-GAAP attributable net profit ¥7.56B (−26.1%). Rare full-stack AI layout — Kunlunxin chips → PaddlePaddle → ERNIE foundation models — “cloud + intelligence” to cut AI cost and lift outcomes.

01 Core businesses

Founded 2000 as search; AI (NLP) long used to match intent to web-scale content. Baidu Brain commercializes advanced AI to customers/enterprises/public sector. Core (ex-iQIYI) AI-powered >70% of total revenue 2020–22 via three engines: search/feed online marketing + AI new domains.

AI Superbase (Dec 27, 2022): first domestic full-stack self-built AI infra — chip (Kunlunxin) / framework (PaddlePaddle) / model (ERNIE) + BaiGe platform / AI middle platform; IaaS deeply coupled with PaaS. Cloud margin improving via reusable standardized solutions and exiting low-margin projects. Public-cloud model platform: inference / fine-tune / host; private: SW license or soft+hard appliance. IDC H1’22: Baidu #1 China AI cloud 4th year running. Three AI cloud/software blocks: AI public cloud (cashflow), custom AI algo/SW (present), AI compute + LMs (future).

PaddlePaddle: by YE2022 — 5.35M developer touches, 200k+ enterprises, #1 China DL platform share; 670k models created on Paddle. Direct support layer under ERNIE.

02 Results

Baidu Core revenue ¥95.4B (~flat YoY). Online marketing ¥69.5B (−5.95%); non-online-marketing ¥25.9B (+22%) — cloud + AI-driven. Q4 revenue ¥33.1B (flat YoY; +2% QoQ vs ¥32.54B); Core ¥25.7B; iQIYI ¥7.6B. Q4 costs/expenses ¥28.484B (−8% YoY). Q4 operating profit ¥4.6B (OM 16%); other income ¥1.8B incl. ¥1.6B long-term item; Q4 net profit ¥5.0B — sharp YoY improvement on cost discipline. Cash + equivalents + restricted + ST investments ¥185.3B. 2023Q1: Baidu AI Cloud first-time profitable. 2022 Core R&D ¥21.416B = 22.4% of Core revenue — AI heavy. Board authorized $5B buyback through Dec 31, 2025; shares +~40% YTD 2023 at writing.

03 AIGC market angle

ERNIE Bot as China’s first ChatGPT-class product kicked off domestic “LM wars” (Huawei Pangu, SenseTime, Alibaba Tongyi…). vs Alibaba Tongyi: C-end parity on most Q&A; Alibaba stronger B-end co-test / enterprise-private model spaces (full Tongyi + industry data lifecycle). Baidu edge: Chinese understanding from search corpus (idioms, acrostics, Sichuan-dialect read). IDC 2022 China LM white paper: ERNIE leading on product/ecosystem/application.

Compute race: China AI chip market ~¥39.6B (2022) → ¥216.4B (2027) CAGR 40.5% (iResearch); alternate Forward: 40–50% CAGR → ¥78.5B by 2024. OpenAI: model compute demand growing ~10,000× faster than HW; Intel: metaverse needs ~1,000× more compute. “East Data West Compute” + AI reshape cloud/SW/chip. Players: three telcos + Alibaba/Tencent/Huawei/Baidu + equipment/chip chain.

Pretrain + fine-tune lets downstream apps land with less data — home, finance, healthcare, security, transport, retail; text/code/image gen for office efficiency.

04 Outlook

GS / MS / JPM / BofA / UBS / BNP “Buy”: ads recover H2’23; AI Cloud above-industry growth; autonomous driving long-term upside. Robin Li (May 4 internal): ERNIE Bot via Baidu AI Cloud = milestone for cloud-intelligence — cloud choice shifts from raw compute/storage to framework + model + chip + app co-design. ERNIE Bot + Baidu App/Search to lift DAU/time-spent, next-gen traffic entry, advertiser interest; Apollo voice HCI upgrade path. Four-layer stack (chip/framework/model/app) enabled first-mover vs Google/Meta/Amazon on genAI product; >1 month beta → 4 major upgrades, inference ~10×.

Charts/images in CN; attach on ingest. Full rewrite covering segments, AI Superbase, ERNIE vs Tongyi, compute thesis.
