## What is an AI Agent — four rules

1.  Perceive the environment
2.  Use observations to decide
3.  Decisions lead to actions
4.  Actions must be rational (maximize performance / best positive outcome)

Unlike ChatGPT’s answer generation, Agents are assistants that set goals, create/prioritize tasks, iterate to completion—optionally via APIs (browse, apps, files, payments) with less human intervention.

**Five classical types:** simple reflex · model-based · goal-based · utility-based · learning Agents.

## Two development directions

**Autonomous Agents** (Auto-GPT-class) — NL goal → automated task execution; clear tool serving humans. **Generative Agents** (Smallville-class) — persona, autonomous decisions, long memory; digital-native social relations beyond tools.

**Value & outlook:** Agents as engines for virtual worlds and enterprise automation; open questions on coordination, safety, and commercialization paths remain live.
