Company | Pika Ships Video Editor and Raises $55M — AI Video Generation for Everyday Creators

Unique Research · Company · December 1, 2023 · Pika Labs

On 28 November 2023, U.S. startup Pika announced a $55 million raise led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with Homebrew, Conviction Capital, SV Angel, and Ben’s Bites participating. The same day it launched Pika 1.0 — a generative video toolkit that edits and creates video from captions and stills across styles such as 3D animation, anime, and cinematic.

Product & competitive set

Pika competes with Runway, Stability AI, and peers, differentiating with tools that extend clip length, restyle (e.g. live-action → animation), expand canvas/aspect ratio, and AI-edit content (change outfits, insert characters). Demand mirrors the Midjourney / DALL·E 3 wave. In the same window, open-source GenAI infra startup Together closed a $102.5M Series A led by Kleiner Perkins with Nvidia and Emergence.

Origin story

Co-founders Demi Guo (郭文景) and Chenlin Meng — former Stanford AI Lab PhD students — spent a winter break making a GenAI film for the first AI Film Festival. Runway had just hit a ~$500M valuation; hours inside Runway and Photoshop exposed painful shooting/edit UX. They left Stanford to build a friendlier AI video generator. ~500,000 people have tried the software; millions of new videos are created weekly. The four-person company has raised $55M across three rounds. Per sources: earlier rounds were led by ex-GitHub CEO Nat Friedman; the latest A put in $35M from Lightspeed at a $200–300M valuation.

Since leaving GitHub in 2021, Friedman has become a leading AI angel; he first backed Pika in April, impressed by an early demo on a single GPU. With frequent co-investor Daniel Gross he offers startups access to a 2,500+ GPU cluster named Andromeda — fuel for Pika’s proprietary video models analogous to GPT-4 / Midjourney. “We’re redesigning the interface of video making,” CEO Guo said. “Making good video is still very hard.”

Until recently Pika lived inside Discord (text → AI video reply). Tuesday it moved the experience to the web with object-level edit/customize features for mainstream users.

Team

Four FTEs: Demi Guo (CEO), Chenlin Meng (CTO), Karlin Chen (CMU ML&CV master’s; ex-SenseTime engineer), and creative lead Matan Cohen-Grumi. Guo is U.S.-born Chinese; both parents hold MIT PhDs; her father Guo Huaqiang is a director of listed Sunyard (信雅达, 600571). On 30 November Sunyard clarified that Guo holds no company role, Sunyard has not invested in Pika, and there is no business link. Sunyard’s first-nine-months 2023 revenue was RMB 1.4B (+18.41% YoY); net profit RMB 53.27M; non-GAAP net RMB 11.07M. As a Hangzhou No.2 High School senior (class 13) Guo received early Harvard admission on 11 Dec 2015 — Zhejiang’s first undergrad admit — with NOIP Zhejiang first prize, MIT contest invites, North America Programming Contest 2nd (ahead of Harvard/Stanford/CMU teams), and back-to-back U.S. National Olympiad in Informatics titles (2014–15).

Roadmap

Pika rents hundreds of GPUs (Andromeda + cloud) for the new model’s finer edits (aspect ratio, etc.) and copyright-filter research. Guo plans ~20 people next year (engineers/researchers). Monetizing the free product is possible later, not priority. Positioning: not a film-pro suite, but easy tools for everyday creators like Guo and Meng — “If Pika had existed a year ago, our Stanford team might have done better at the AI Film Festival.”
