“I’ve always believed AI will change the world, but we continually confront tech limits and uncertainty. So we need to figure out what works today — without losing sight of tomorrow.” — Amit Bendov, CEO & Co-founder, Gong

Empowered buyers, thinner information gaps

Self-serve product research is now a core of the modern journey. GenAI accelerates that: traditional search usage −11% over ~2 years while ChatGPT-class tools +37%. a16z partners argue sales platforms will leave single text DBs for multimodal (text/image/audio/video) systems that mine deeper customer insight. Alexander Group’s Davis Giedt: AI widens GTM options, frees sales leaders from admin toward talent select/retain — short-term friction, long-term step-change.

Adoption also means fiercer competition: firms that use AI well open new opportunities and lift outreach ROI; time saved by reps flows into higher-quality conversations. Gartner: leaders who responsibly guide GenAI use will raise sales outcomes — via enablement plans tied to the rep as revenue creator.

Gartner: two dimensions

  1. Shorter cycles + higher engagement — demand gen, predictive analytics, conversation intelligence. Clean CRM → chatbots/VCAs in real time; personalized content; predictive lead qual / guided selling / opportunity scoring; NLP conversation intel across calls/emails.
  2. Better seller effectiveness — coaching, next-best-action, auto follow-ups so humans focus on judgment and relationships.

Four representative AI sales applications

1. AI SDR — GenAI in B2B sales <5% in 2023 → ~60% by 2028 (CN cite). Automates DB search, web research, personalized messaging, email follow-ups; consistent experience; pattern detection for timely touches. Goal: amplify human SDRs on high-value relationship work. Salesforce announced Agentforce-class AI SDR capabilities targeting Oct (per CN timing).

2. Conversation / call intelligence + coaching — auto transcript, talk-listen ratios, objection tagging, deal-risk signals; manager coaching at scale.

3. Email & subject-line generation; content personalization — variants tested against ICP context.

4. Lead prioritization & scoring — unify CRM + product usage + intent to rank accounts and suggest next action.

How sales orgs prepare

  1. Stabilize a single source of truth before fancy models.
  2. Integrate AI carefully into the sales process — start with narrow, measurable plays; keep humans in the loop on customer-facing judgment.
  3. Invest in data + AI-literate sellers; redesign roles as AI compresses SDR / CSM / AE task boundaries (CN thesis: one augmented seller may cover multiple classic roles).

How far is the ideal AI-augmented sale? — BCG gap

BCG: tech advanced for a decade; value delivery lags. Pilots look good; scale stalls; feature sprawl creates attention fatigue. Four failure modes:

  1. Unstable data foundation — messy CRM hierarchies, missing fields, bad vertical tags, duplicates; fuzzy-match third-party data → “garbage in, garbage out.”
  2. Sandbox black boxes — models built only by data teams without frontline feedback loops → recommendations lack trust/transparency.
  3. Weak experimentation — no test-and-learn; advice decays as markets move.
  4. Tooling mismatch — stacks that don’t fit seller workflows; more dashboards than decisions.

McKinsey value lens

McKinsey The economic potential of generative AI (2023): customer ops, marketing & sales, software eng, R&D ≈ 75% of GenAI annual value across 16 business functions. Two sales plays: (1) lift conversion via richer profiles + prioritized leads + proactive coaching at each touch; (2) nurture — scripts, cross-sell cues, automated follow-up until ready for human. Estimated +3–5% sales efficiency vs global sales spend — possibly still undercounting upside.

Close

AI in sales workflows is less an optional experiment than an adaptive necessity. Penetration is already tangible and invisible inside personal and team process. Firms that pair judgment with data — and invest in both tech and people — keep the edge; those that don’t will be sorted quickly.
