# Unique Capital’s Wei Wu: SaaStr Annual 2024 — Speaker Highlights

_Unique Research · Insight · September 20, 2024 · On-site notes: Wei Wu, Partner, Unique Capital · Edited by Qiuping_

SaaStr Annual 2024 — dubbed SaaS’s “Super Bowl” by Zoom founder Eric Yuan — ran Sep 11–12 in San Francisco for its 10th edition. Founder Jason Lemkin noted higher C-level and more international attendance. Highlights below from Unique Capital’s Wei Wu.

## Trend: AI becomes table-stakes SaaS

Lemkin: from 2024, AI is a baseline SaaS feature. **Customers** expect AI to replace 30–50% of human work, turn unstructured data searchable, understand plain English, automate complex onboarding, and consolidate plugins into the core platform — even when vendors over-promise. Automation 3.0 is where many SMBs put AI spend; expectations are irreversible. **Vendors** must ship qualitative product leaps — post-IPO especially. Multi-product is the new norm. Efficiency bar: at $1B ARR, margins >20%; at $200M ARR, headcount may be ~700.

## Business: fundraising data that persuades SaaS investors

Point Nine partner Christoph Janz — prepare KPIs for A/B; cover ~90% of diligence asks; show growth + efficiency; at B, GTM scalability; crisp high-quality data; if overall weak, zoom into winning segments.

**1) KPI sheet & financial plan** — 2y actuals + 2y forecast. PLG: m/m; mature: q/q. Funnel: PLG visitors/trials/conversion; enterprise MQLs/SQLs/new logos; logo + NRR churn. Financials: MRR/ARR, CoGS, R&D, S&M, G&A, P&L, cash in/out, burn, bank. Health: CAC, burn multiple, ARR/FTE. Growth: ARR $1–5M → 2–3× YoY; $5–10M → ~2×. Efficiency: early burn multiple <2–4×; later Rule of 40–50; NDR >100% (unless viral C-side PLG).

**2) Cohorts** — churn, retention, CAC payback, CLTV; don’t mix monthly vs annual plans; segment if mixed ICP; investors want ≥1 strong segment + improving “smile curve.”

**3) Marketing & leads** — spend/leads/conversions by source; cost per lead/trial/SQL/customer; transparent CAC (channel or blended; startup costs excludeable if disclosed).

**4) Sales & pipeline** — ideally record new pipeline and closed-won each quarter; rigorous pipeline hygiene.

**5) AI-related data** — ongoing customer use/value; model performance if finetuned/owned; unit-econ impact incl. infra/human-in-loop; do customers retain and pay; is it a profitable line; does it deepen moat?

## Hiring a VP Sales — Lemkin’s 8 principles (2024 remix of 2014 talk)

1. Founder-led sales isn’t forever — past ~$5M ARR you need a real VP Sales for ABM and large deals.
2. Don’t hire disillusioned, burned-out, or demotivated candidates (post-COVID wave).
3. Don’t hire a VP who won’t sell personally in week one (process-PPT first is a red flag).
4. Must become a product expert — answer 20–30 hard questions without SE cover.
5. Must be 100% trusted — don’t lower the bar under pressure.
6. “Athlete who does everything” is mostly myth — verify outbound, partnerships, channel, technical buyers, industry, face-to-face, price band.
7. Bad hire can set you back a year (and they hire more bad reps) — wait; bad hires are founder responsibility.
8. Don’t over-trust perfect résumés — verify they personally hired/coached 2–3 great AEs; call those AEs.

## Fireside: Jason Lemkin × Klaviyo CEO Andrew Bialecki

Klaviyo (2012, Bialecki + Ed Hallen) — from analytics/CRM into personalized e-com email/SMS. 2018–19 BFCM surge; 2021 $320M D; 2022 Shopify $100M strategic at $9.5B. 150k+ customers in 80+ countries; 2023 revenue $698.1M; NRR ~117%; 2024 ARR tracking toward ~$1B. Only SaaS IPO success since Dec 2021 — notable given SMB-heavy base.

**Highlights:** early automation cleared ROI fog; API connectors (deep Shopify) are a distribution game, not just product; don’t monetize integrations — they’re competitive advantage; privacy/security first (encryption, access control, audits); enterprise expansion via customers/partners more than a giant sales army; vision: global leader in customer data + marketing platforms.

**Quotes (Bialecki):** “If we can solve these basic pain points, then we can build on that.” / “It’s not just a product game, it’s also a market game.” / “We don’t make money from integrations, but it’s a huge competitive advantage.” / “Data privacy and security are our top priorities.” / “Our goal is to become the global leader in customer data and marketing platforms.”
