# Are AI Companions the Next Mainstream Digital Entertainment Trend?

_Unique Research · Insight · October 29, 2024 · Author: Andrew Kim / ARK Invest (CN editorial)_

Since ChatGPT (Nov 2022), LLMs remade text/image/video/3D generation — and lit up consumer entertainment. ARK: AI companions as a digital entertainment category could grow ~5× this decade from ~$30M global annual revenue to **$70–150B**.

## What counts as an AI companion

Entertainment/social interaction with GenAI virtual characters. Early forms: text-centric roleplay apps; A/V game building blocks; social platforms mixing human–human and human–AI. **Replika** (2017) peaked ~2.5M mobile MAU (Jun 2021) — text/voice/calls/AR gifts. **Character.AI** (2021) user-created bot marketplace → ~15M mobile MAU by Mar 2024 + voice. Traffic also flows to roleplay that disrupts anonymous chat, fanfic, interactive fiction — and NSFW: NSFW AI sites took **14.5%** of online adult-entertainment traffic from OnlyFans by Mar 2024 (vs 1.5% a year earlier).

Games: community mods for Skyrim / Stardew / Cyberpunk NPCs; indies + Roblox/Unity GenAI tooling. Virtual-pet lineage (Pokémon ~$30B cumulative; The Sims >200M copies; Adopt Me! 36B Roblox visits; Tamagotchi ~91M units; Neopets 35M MAU peak 2005) points to GenAI companions as a genre, not just a feature. Meta celebrity AI profiles on Instagram; Discord third-party companion bots.

## Games history as roadmap

1970s–80s: home consoles/PCs → many non-arcade titles were text/spreadsheet (Colossal Cave, Zork). Within a decade, 8-bit visual consoles (NES, Super Mario) cut text/spreadsheet share ~50 pp. Inflation-adjusted game industry revenue 1975–2000: $6B → $31B (~7% CAGR). New giants (Activision, Capcom, EA, LucasArts, Ubisoft, Bethesda, Blizzard, Bungie, Epic) rode audiovisual leaps. AI companions sit at a similar pivot — from text RP to emotionally responsive 2D/3D characters.

## Loneliness & adoption

U.S. alone waking time 2003–2022: 5.3h → 7.4h (+~40%). Social media time 2011–2021: 0.8h → 1.7h/day; HS students reporting persistent sadness 29% → 44% — correlation ≠ causation, but online fills boredom. ARK Big Ideas: online time 2023–2030 may rise 25% (40% → 50% of waking time). LLM entertainment cost falling ~75%/year widens physical vs digital leisure gap. Companion platform MAU 2018–2023: <0.5M → ~15M (~30×). Early adoption pace ~150% of social/online-gaming’s first six years; if peak saturation matches those categories → >40% of global internet users by 2030 (~3B). Character.AI ~0.6h/day engagement (vs Roblox ~0.6h, dating ~0.1h, social ~0.8h). Base case: companion hours/year 1.2B → ~700B (Roblox-like); social-parity → ~900B hrs @ ~160% CAGR.

## Monetization

Today mostly subscriptions (~$0.03/user-hour) under inference-cost pressure. As costs fall, models should evolve like license→SaaS and metered voice→unlimited mobile. Base case monetization ~**$0.10**/user-hour (blend of social ads, influencer, games, dating ARPU 2021–23); bull ~$0.16 if advertisers treat companions like social. Mix: siphon social/influencer ad dollars via personalized interest; game-like microtransactions/virtual goods (virtual pet companions).

## Outlook

Base / bull 2030 companion platform revenue **$70B / $150B** (CAGR ~200% / 240%) — still vs ~$610B related markets today, with larger post-2030 upside. Immersive A/V + simulated EQ → companions as loneliness mitigators at global scale.
