# Unique Interview | TiMotion’s Eric × Unique Capital’s Wei Wu: Where Chinese AI Can Overtake Abroad

_Unique Research · Interview · November 7, 2024_

TiMotion founding partner **Eric** talks with Unique Capital partner **Wei Wu (畏 吴)** on Chinese AI apps going global. Full podcast in CN package.

## Today’s AI ≠ AI of a decade ago

**Wu:** Ten years ago = discriminative AI (vision at stations, industrial inspection — “is this a person/cat/dog”). Today = generative. AI+tools and AI+social — classic outbound categories — are revitalized by the new stack.

## Monetization & the four quadrants

Early apps lived on traffic monetization; growing DAU now costs more. Emotional companion apps still struggle to match human chat’s emotional value at real-time multimodal cost — GPT-4o camera demos exist, but live voice/digital-human/video remain expensive; when costs fall, willingness to pay arrives. Otome / story games fit generative branching; one founder’s idol-fanfic app generates 8–10k characters in ~10 minutes with organic fan communities, heading overseas.

**Wu’s 2×2:** x-axis time spent (short↔long); y-axis make money ↔ save money. China ToC often “spend time” (entertainment); West pays for “save time” (efficiency) because labor is expensive — even tiny startups buy a dozen SaaS seats. Chinese efficiency tools have overseas upside; market still crowded in quadrant 1 (spend money + spend time) vs. sparse save-time quadrants.

## Global observation

ToC AI apps skew global; ToB AI apps skew China. Domestic ToC cold-start lacks traffic; compliance/content moderation harder for startups vs. Big Tech → push overseas; ARPU × FX helps. Summary Eric/Wu: ToC → global first; ToB → domestic first.

## 2024 keywords: AI + globalization / “Born to global”

Not only “domestic then export” — companies born global (ByteDance, TEMU cited among digital peers). Outbound deepened: content → games → tools (localize language) → cross-border e-commerce (warehouses, payments, local compliance) → now AI apps. ToC localization lighter than ToB (regs, culture, data security). True global brands need “flesh abroad” — local culture, brand, legal entity, not just goods. U.S. top-10 e-commerce mixes platforms and DTC brand sites — full platform custody kills margin, customer ownership, brand premium; multi-channel + own site matters. China supply chain is extreme; next leap is brand, not only SKUs. Innovation at both ends: digital infrastructure + brand/future thinking. Low-efficiency price wars are over.

**Closing:** “Ti” (titanium) — lightest metal with “gold” radical — help outbound companies go lighter/faster to sustainable global growth.

## Bonus Q&A (marketing)

**Who among mid-tier AI advertisers will scale spend?** Watch external capital (growth mandate → paid early) vs. bootstrap (SEO/KOL/community first; 5–10× organic then paid); and whether ROI can close on own cash.

**2025 marketing AI:** last years = creative production; pure GenAI video still weak for ads — 2025 may crack short-form ad creatives; cost secondary to quality.

**Own model vs. API?** Different roads — apps can fine-tune, API, RAG; training foundation models is another cost/cycle game. AIGC moats aren’t “finished.”
