ChatGPT at Two | Big Tech Captured Most of the Upside

Unique Research · Industry · December 2, 2024

OpenAI’s ChatGPT turns two. Bloomberg Opinion’s Parmy Olson and Carolyn Silverman (Nov 29): the biggest winners from the ChatGPT boom are global tech giants — not the “all of humanity” Sam Altman hoped for.

Since ChatGPT launched, six major tech firms’ market value rose by $8T+ combined. From January 2022, tech drove the S&P 500 up ~30%; NVIDIA became the world’s leading chip company; Microsoft, Amazon, and Google cloud revenue surged.

Olson and Silverman: as AI-revolution hype swept markets and companies raced to stay competitive, an uneasy prospect emerged — the supposedly transformative tech may never deliver broad economic transformation, only concentrate more wealth at the top.

McKinsey expects ~40% of this year’s business to be AI-related; IBM and Accenture ride the wave. For startups and non-tech firms, capturing some return would be “healthier” — yet they face a grim path: build apps or enterprise software, then watch giants ship the same thing and squeeze them out. Building a foundational model to rival ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Llama remains brutal.
