Thinking | How AI and Human Creativity Will Remake Marketing

Unique Research · Thinking · December 11, 2024

AI is reshaping marketing at unprecedented speed. Real magic happens when tech walks with human creativity. Marketers are wired for creative work; AI lets them return to that core.

“Marketing has always been an early adopter — wherever consumer attention goes, marketing follows,” says Roy Capon, global experience lead at Avanade (digital services and AI solutions on Microsoft and Sitecore). “Curiosity to try new things can create competitive edge and new ways to connect with customers.”

Human creativity still invents the best ideas; AI sparks thinking and clears drudgery. “The most legendary ads of all time — AI could never have conceived them,” Capon says. “But it can do the mechanical work so we do the interesting, creative, brilliant work that needs a human brain.”

Avanade’s Trendlines: 2025 AI Value Report finds only 60% of companies across industries put AI as a top priority — yet marketers are primed. Companion research From Content to Experience (North America, UK, Australia): 82% of brands plan to adopt AI soon; over two-thirds expect some integration within two years — but only 12% say they are fully ready at scale. Uses span repetitive tasks for productivity, ideation support, and iterating existing creatives — including hyper-personalization for millions of content variants in real time.

Folding AI into strategy (audience, positioning) can feel daunting; research says opportunity outweighs challenge. Understanding how AI complements human creativity and strategy lets teams redefine the category.

Free creative time

AI is a collaborator, not a replacement. “I find it liberating in many ways,” Capon says. CMOs and senior marketers agree — 74% say human creativity and intuition can never be replaced by machines. Use AI for data processing and analysis that bog teams down. Bottom-up cultures that encourage tech experiments historically unlock productivity, engagement, and brand growth.

Personalization at scale

Right message, right person, right time — true for 30 years — is now achievable because AI processes purchase history, email engagement, support chats, and more. Joint research ranks personalization at scale as the top expected benefit of AI + marketing. AI stretches across millions of interactions; teams shift to strategy and creative direction while models mine behavior and forecast trends.

Sitecore CMO Cassie Johnson: imagine a shopper browsing hiking gear — AI stitches browsing, past purchases, even support tickets into a one-of-a-kind journey: best backpack recommendation, timely email with personalized kit advice — precision hard to replicate by hand.

Brand consistency and compliance

Brand books and style guides (fonts, Pantones, voice) can be learned by tools that cut human error. Yet 54% of CMOs worry about training AI to hold consistency across distributed teams and channels — seen as the riskiest implementation area, and where human guidance matters most.

Microsoft global business strategy director Michelle Fisher: “We’re only glimpsing what AI can do for brand and content. Treating AI as a partner, not a replacement, takes courage — but the payoff is huge. Human insight remains the steering force.”

Compliance too: instead of humans chasing ICC Advertising and Marketing Communications Code 2024 and the AI Act, tools ingest rules and enforce them. Treat ML as a partnership that builds more optimized, personalized campaigns. AI will not fully replace marketers — but as Capon puts it: “It gives us more time to think and act. That’s the real power. Once we see it that way, it scales further.”
