# Funding | AI SDRs Are Booming — Why Are VCs Still Cautious?

_Unique Research · Funding · December 27, 2024_

Ask VCs about AI startups and they’ll say enterprises are experimenting furiously — but folding AI into real workflows is slow. There are exceptions. One is **AI sales development representatives (AI SDRs)**: systems that use LLMs and voice to write personalized outreach and auto-dial prospects.

Index Ventures partner Shardul Shah on the AI SDR boom: “In some markets we see five to ten companies all succeeding in a short window.” Many startups targeting one problem is common; all growing fast is rare — yet investors say that is what automated sales-content startups look like.

“Look at any one of them and product–market fit is stunning,” Shah said. “When _all_ of them have stunning PMF, it’s hard to answer: how does this play out?”

Index has not invested in any of them; many are under a year old. Despite heat and paying customers, it is unclear whether growth lasts — or whether, once novelty fades, tools get shelved like other AI pilots that never beat human outreach.

## SMBs love trying AI sales LLMs

Docket founder Arjun Pillai (ex-ZoomInfo CDO) argues SMBs can easily experiment. “Cold-email reply rates have fallen at least 50% in two years. Now a wave of companies claim they can raise replies — so everyone is willing to try.”

Better-known AI SDR startups include Regie.ai, AiSDR, Artisan, and 11x.ai; ZoomInfo has also shipped competing copilots and virtual-rep features. Revenue is rising fast — whether they help companies _sell_ better is less clear.

Theory Ventures founder Tomasz Tunguz said a public-company CRO told him AI SDRs generated many leads over nine months but no actual sales. At SaaStr in September: “It’s not that AI doesn’t work. It’s that many of us still don’t know how to use AI.”

## Will incumbents crush them?

SignalFire partner and CEO Chris Farmer sees huge opportunity in sales/marketing AI — but without differentiated data access, AI SDR startups risk being overtaken by Salesforce, HubSpot, and ZoomInfo, which already hold customer data. Their own bots on that data could be more effective.

Another VC who studied the space without investing said several AI SDR startups hit **$1M ARR** in under a year — attractive growth, but like Farmer she fears incumbents may eventually ship the capability as a free feature.

Jasper — once valued at $1.5B, then forced to cut ~30% after ChatGPT — is a cautionary tale for some investors.

VCs are not surprised by rapid AI SDR adoption; they doubt durability.
