# Funding | Generative AI Fundraising Hit Another Record in 2024

_Unique Research · Funding · January 6, 2025_

In 2024, investment in generative AI — apps, tools, and services that produce text, images, video, voice, music, and more — reached unprecedented heights. PitchBook data compiled for TechCrunch show global generative-AI companies raised **$56 billion** from VCs across **885** deals.

That cash total set a sector record — up **192%** from 2023, when investors put **$29.1 billion** into 691 generative-AI startups.

“We don’t see generative-AI fundraising slowing,” PitchBook emerging-tech analyst Ali Javaheri said, “because household names like OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI keep raising large rounds and shipping competitive products.”

Deal value spiked to **$31.1 billion** in Q4 2024, including Databricks’ $1B Series J, xAI’s $600M Series C, Amazon’s $400M strategic into Anthropic, and OpenAI’s $6.6B raise.

M&A was a smaller slice: about **$951 million** in generative AI — not counting “acqui-hires.” Google reportedly spent ~$2.7B to hire most of Character.AI and license its tech; Microsoft spent ~$650M to license Inflection’s models and hire CEO Mustafa Suleyman.

U.S. companies took most of the capital; startups outside the U.S. got only **$6.2 billion** of 2024 generative-AI VC. Still, big winners included Beijing’s Moonshot AI ($1B in February), France’s Mistral (~$640M in June), Cologne’s DeepL ($300M in May), Shanghai’s MiniMax ($600M in March), and Japan’s Sakana AI (~$214M in September).

## What about 2025?

Javaheri expects saturation as many near-identical startups crowd categories. Last year alone, at least four AI coding-assistant companies — Augment, Magic, Codeium, and Poolside — closed $100M+ rounds, while generative-media names such as Black Forest Labs and ElevenLabs raised tens of millions at lofty valuations.

Pressure for real revenue growth may make that hard to sustain. Compute costs and technical hurdles will squeeze players: “Only the best-capitalized startups can keep pace with frontier models,” Javaheri said, “so most high valuations will sit at the infrastructure layer.”

That favors infra names that already did well in 2024 — data-center startups Crusoe ($600M in December) and Lambda ($320M in February) among the largest rounds. KKR forecasts global data-center spend rising toward **$250 billion** a year as AI demand surges.
