ChatGPT MAU Down 6.11% — Are Users Fleeing to Gemini? | AI Top 100, September 2025

September 2025 | Global AI Web Top 100 — Traffic Snapshot

  • The Top 100 AI Web sites generated ~10.135 billion visits in September.

  • Overseas sites accounted for 91.9%; China domestic + China-going-global combined for 8.1%.

  • Traffic is highly concentrated: Top 10 = 82.2%, Top 20 = 88.7%.

  • Chatbots dominate with 76.7% of total visits.

Leaders & Movers

  • ChatGPT: slight uptick (+0.98%).

  • Gemini (+46.24%) and Google AI Studio (+64.13%) were September’s most visible growth engines.

  • Perplexity kept climbing (+14.35%).

  • Grok (-7.44%) and JanitorAI (-10.01%) saw pullbacks.

Category Signals
Beyond “chatbots,” several long-tail, job-to-be-done categories posted higher weighted MoM growth in September: Education, Content Detection, Sales, Navigation Hubs, PPT Generation.
Drivers: seasonality (back-to-school / project kickoff) and structural demand as B2B tools become more prominent.

  • Total visits: ~672 million; Top 10 = 86.9%.

  • Total MAU: ~137 million; Top 10 = 77.6%.

  • The primary corridor is “Chat + Search + Assistant” built by DeepSeek + Quark/Baidu AI Search/Tencent Yuanbao.

  • By company scale, DeepSeek, Alibaba, Baidu, ByteDance lead.

  • Standout growers in their niches: Qoder, iFLYTEK Zhizuo, JiMeng AI, Baidu AI Search.

From the Web total: ~10.135B visits, with Top 10 = 82.2%, Top 20 = 88.7%.
Implication: for most new entrants, it’s hard to “shortcut” via generic portals; sustainable entry points will come from specific categories and concrete use cases. Unlike the app ecosystem, the Web relies more on search/direct access + word of mouth, which compounds brand advantage at the top.

By category share, Chatbots remain the ballast at 76.7%, followed by Emotional Companions, Smart Search, Personal Assistants, Image Editing, etc. In short, core Web behavior still centers on “ask → get answers/generate content,” with toolchain needs (rewrite, edit, retrieval, layout) distributed as the next-most-frequent tail behaviors.

Using weighted MoM to gauge structural momentum, September’s leaders (outside Chatbots) were Education, Content Detection, Sales, Navigation Sites, PPT Generation (Education ranked highest).

Common threads:

  • Education: back-to-school/course kickoff; AIGC is normalizing in lesson prep, homework, and material comprehension.

  • Content Detection/Rewriting: pulled by platform moderation and publishing needs.

  • Sales / Navigation / PPT: workflow bottlenecks—when they deliver real time savings or conversion uplift, users stick and reuse.

  • ChatGPT still leads by absolute scale, but only +0.98% MoM. With ChatGPT AgentKit launching in October, we’ll see if that changes the curve.

  • Gemini (+46.24%) + Google AI Studio (+64.13%) form a “consumer platform + developer” dual flywheel, signaling Google’s renewed Web push: the former as user entry, the latter activating developers/workflows.

  • Claude maintained steady growth (+5.72%); Perplexity (+14.35%) continued expanding the “answers-at-retrieval” mindset.

  • Grok (-7.44%) and JanitorAI (-10.01%) had a staged pullback—one amid Personal Assistant competition, the other from intra-category splits in Emotional Companions.

If we break down growth contribution, the biggest new increments in September came from Google properties and several export-oriented niche tools, e.g.:

  • Nano Banana (image editing) +292% MoM

  • DupDub (text-to-speech) +209%

  • Subject.com (education) +279%

  • MuleRun (agents) +419%
These aren’t yet top-scale in absolute terms, but they meaningfully pulled the structural growth line.

  • Visits (Sept): ~672M; Top 10 = 86.9%. Chatbots contribute 60%+ of visits.
Company scale leaders: DeepSeek (~321M), then ByteDance (~108M), Alibaba (~89M), Baidu (~55M), Tencent (~23M).
Growth highlights: Qoder (dev tools, +107%), iFLYTEK Zhizuo (video generation, +90%), JiMeng AI (image generation, +27%), Baidu AI Search (+20%). Together they show that creation chain + retrieval entry still deliver sustained acquisition on the Web.

  • MAU (Sept): ~137M; Top 10 = 77.6%.
DeepSeek, Quark/Baidu AI Search, Doubao/Yuanbao form the “Chat + Search + Assistant” mainline.
In subcategory growth, WPS AI, Qoder, Kimi Open Platform, iFLYTEK Zhizuo, Alibaba Tongyi Tingwu stayed active across productivity and developer scenarios—evidence of the ongoing shift from point tools to workflows.
