After ChatGPT Captured 51% of Revenue in the Global AI Top 100 Sample, Who Earned the Rest? | October 2025

Original · Unique Research · 2025-12-02

Historical-edition note: This is the complete December 2, 2025 source, including its methods, promotional and reuse statements, appendix, and all 200 rows visibly printed in nine ranking images. The headline’s 51% refers to the report’s selected global Top 100 sample, not all AI applications worldwide. Revenue totals are modeled annualized estimates based on the stated monthly period, not cash collected during October or audited full-year revenue; the source sometimes uses ARR, annual revenue and annualized IAP imprecisely. The original methodology, independent-monitoring claims, company-disclosure calibration and claimed ±10% error remain the report’s own assertions, not a new independent audit. Its UV-as-IP and ARR definitions are reproduced as written, not universal measurement standards. Its “open source/free” language must be read alongside its stated noncommercial-use and authorization limits. The source compares Chinese-founded products, including those serving overseas users, but sometimes describes that combined sample as China’s domestic market; this does not establish the geographic location of customers. Source charts contain unresolved differences: ChatGPT App revenue is approximately USD 2,970 million in Image 4 versus USD 3,569 million in Image 7; Claude App revenue is about USD 40 million in Image 4, USD 51 million in Image 5 and USD 52 million in Image 7. Canva appears in the Web ranking but not the displayed combined-product ranking. The Web growth scatter labels also differ from their adjacent table. These original conflicts are preserved and identified, not silently harmonized. Nano Banana Pro was announced on November 20, 2025, after the October measurement period; the source’s “past few months” statement is retained as retrospective commentary, not evidence that this model caused October revenue. Minor component/total differences and differing rounded numbers remain as printed.

First, an update: we have now added the revenue data for September and October. The complete rankings and raw data remain in the familiar place. In this article, we try to explain some structures and trends that are not easy to detect at a glance. Because this is a catch-up update, it also gives us a little more distance. Rather than focusing only on which products rose or fell in a single month, we are more interested in several questions: by October 2025, how much money were AI applications worldwide actually making? In which types of products was that money concentrated? And where exactly did Chinese teams, particularly products expanding overseas, stand on this revenue map?

I. The Global Landscape: One Enormous Leader with a Long Middle and Tail

Start with the most direct calculation: in October 2025, these 100 AI products worldwide had estimated annual recurring revenue of approximately $34.753 billion.

ChatGPT alone took $17.804 billion, about 51% of the entire sample. Claude followed with approximately $6.005 billion in annual revenue, about 17%. Mercor, a recruiting tool, ranked third with approximately $1.385 billion, close to 4%.

In other words, the top 3 together generated approximately $25.2 billion, accounting for more than 72% of the top 100's total revenue. The top 10 together approached $29 billion, with a share of approximately 83%.

Looking further down the ranking reveals an interesting contrast:

Among these 100 products, a product near the median generated about $50 million in annual revenue. Beneath the extreme concentration at the top is a long middle tier generating from tens of millions to one or two hundred million dollars, which supports the remaining 16%-17% of revenue. These products are often ranked first or second in a specialized scenario: vertical coding assistants, professional writing software, intelligent customer service, search-enhancement tools, and similar categories.

II. Beyond ChatGPT: What Does the Category Distribution Tell Us?

If we temporarily set aside the question of who earns the most and examine revenue by product category, the trend becomes easier to see.

In the global ranking, the chatbot category generated approximately $24.032 billion in revenue, about 69% of the entire sample, despite containing only 7 products. A closer breakdown shows that ChatGPT and Claude have formed a near-duopoly in this category: together, they account for close to 99% of chatbot revenue.

Beyond chatbots, the leading revenue categories included:

Coding assistants: approximately $1.522 billion across 8 products;

Recruiting tools, primarily Mercor: approximately $1.385 billion;

Writing software: approximately $929 million across 3 products;

Video generation, image editing, image generation, personal assistants, intelligent search, customer support, and other categories each generated mostly hundreds of millions of dollars, with 2-10 products in each category. This structure reveals two things.

First, in revenue-generating power, general-purpose conversational products have opened a gap of more than an order of magnitude over other categories. Once foundation-model infrastructure matured, products able to capture stronger mindshare and greater willingness to pay at the conversational entry point could rapidly amplify revenue. ChatGPT and Claude demonstrate this directly.

Second, in terms of opportunity density, the truly abundant territory lies outside chatbots. Coding assistants, writing software, search enhancement, customer support, knowledge management, marketing tools, and related areas have each produced products generating tens or hundreds of millions of dollars, yet their concentration is far less extreme than in conversational products. This is why many startup teams today deliberately avoid the narrative of building yet another ChatGPT and instead go deep within specific workflows.

III. Web and App: Business-Model Differences Behind the Channel Structure

Now consider another question: through which channels is the money collected?

Among the global top 100, Web products generated approximately $28.504 billion and App products about $6.250 billion, giving Web a share close to 82%. On the surface, this is a typical Web-primary, App-secondary structure.

But dividing products into Web-only, App-only, and cross-platform groups produces a more detailed picture:

There were 46 Web-only products, but they generated only about 17.9% of total revenue;

There were 35 App-only products, contributing approximately 6.4%;

The remaining 19 products operating on both Web+App captured about 75.8% of revenue. In other words, the largest revenue generators generally chose to operate on at least two platforms. Products such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Grammarly use the Web to deliver complex functionality and high-priced subscriptions while also using the App as an always-available entry point that reaches users in more settings.

The channel differences fundamentally reflect different business models:

Tools oriented toward B2B customers depend more heavily on the Web to support long-cycle, high-value contracts. Consumer-oriented content and lightweight tools are more inclined to aggregate large user bases through Apps. Once a product seeks to grow from tens of millions of dollars in revenue to more than $100 million, however, relying on only one platform becomes difficult.

IV. Chinese AI Products: Still Modest in Scale, but Already Structurally Established

Now return to the Chinese sample that matters more to us.

In the separately calculated Chinese AI product revenue ranking, the top 100 Chinese products generated approximately $1.866 billion in annual revenue. Compared with the global total of $34.753 billion, they represented roughly 5%-6% of the sample.

Among them, 21 Chinese products entered the global top 100. Together, they generated approximately $1.332 billion, representing about 3.8% of revenue in the global top 100.

The category structure of Chinese AI products differs clearly from the global landscape:

Video-generation products generated approximately $395 million, about 21% of the Chinese sample, with 14 products in the ranking;

Image-editing products generated approximately $379 million, about 20%, also with 14 products;

Article summarization, represented by PLAUD, generated approximately $167 million;

Intelligent search, image generation, agents, object recognition, video editing, emotional companionship, and other categories mostly generated from tens of millions to more than $100 million. Unlike the global ranking, where chatbots overwhelmingly dominate, Chinese AI revenue looks more like multiple parallel tracks. Concentration at the upstream foundation-model layer may be similarly high, but at the product layer, the early leaders are tools built around tangible scenarios such as images, video, search, note-taking, cameras, photo enhancement, and beauty effects. Comparing concentration also reveals this difference:

In the Chinese ranking, the top 3 generated approximately $470 million in total, about 25%; the top 10 generated approximately $1.019 billion, about 55%. By comparison, the global top 3 approached 73%, and the top 10 exceeded 83%.

The comparison in channel structure is equally interesting.

Revenue from Chinese AI applications was almost evenly divided between the Web and Apps: approximately $927 million on the Web and $937 million from Apps. That stands in sharp contrast to the global structure, where 82% leans toward the Web, while also matching intuition about domestic user habits—many Chinese AI products are naturally bound to users through mobile devices.

V. Chinese AI Going Global: More Revenue Comes from Overseas, Concentrated in Visual and Audio Tools

Next, consider Chinese AI products expanding overseas.

In the revenue ranking for Chinese AI products going global, the top 100 generated approximately $1.427 billion, about 76% of the Chinese sample. In other words, among Chinese AI products entering the top 100, more than two-thirds of revenue came from products primarily serving overseas users.

The category distribution of these products was more concentrated:

Video-generation products generated approximately $376 million in total, about 26%, with representative players including KLING AI, HeyGen, and PixVerse;

Image-editing products generated approximately $208 million, a little over 14%, with representatives including Hypic, Airbrush, and BeautyPlus;

Over the past few months, the popularity of new models such as Nano Banana Pro has also objectively pushed image-creation platforms represented by SeaArt AI, with ARR of $30 million, to higher positions. Models are the foundation, but these concrete products are what actually monetize aesthetics and workflows.

Article summarization, including PLAUD; agents, including manus; object recognition, including PictureThis; image generation; video editing; intelligent search; emotional companionship; education; and other categories together accounted for most of the remaining revenue. The top 10 make this structure clear:

KLING AI, PLAUD, HeyGen, manus, Hypic, PictureThis, Genspark, Airbrush, PixVerse, and OpusClip are almost entirely centered on productivity-plus-aesthetics scenarios involving content creation, image and video processing, search, and knowledge management.

In concentration, the overseas ranking fell between the global landscape and all Chinese products:

The top 3, KLING AI, PLAUD, and HeyGen, generated approximately $439 million in total, accounting for 30.8%; the top 10 generated approximately $872 million, accounting for 61.1%.

This indicates that Chinese AI products going global have both clear leaders and a substantial middle tier. Many small teams focused on a single category are already earning tens of millions of dollars overseas.

In channel terms, overseas AI products leaned more heavily toward the Web:

The Web generated approximately $873 million versus $553 million for Apps, meaning the Web accounted for more than 60%. Compared with the roughly even split across all Chinese products, overseas products depend more on the Web for core revenue. This largely reflects overseas users' payment habits in desktop and browser environments, as well as the preference of B2B and prosumer users for Web tools.

VI. The Growth Ranking: Where Is New Acceleration Emerging Beneath Stable Revenue?

Revenue scale tells us who earns the most today, while growth data acts more like a speedometer pointing toward where the market may turn next.

On the Web, we separately examined the AI web revenue-growth ranking. It orders products by month-over-month growth in monthly recurring revenue and likewise contains a sample of 100 products:

Among these 100 growth leaders, the median month-over-month growth rate was approximately 30%, while the maximum reported growth was 3.56 times the prior-month base (356%, as printed in the ranking table);

Leading products included video-generation tools such as PixVerse, VIGGLE, and Nim; writing tools such as KoalaWriter and Grammarly; productivity and knowledge-management tools such as Intellecs.AI and RemNote; agent products such as sintra; and marketing and social-media tools such as rephonic and ReelFarm. Even within this subset of the top 100 by growth, most products still posted monthly growth in the range of 10%-60%, rather than everyone multiplying several times over. Products growing more than 2 times had generally either just opened a new channel or started from a very low base.

More notably, video generation, writing software, productivity tools, and marketing tools appeared repeatedly in this growth ranking, indicating that these areas were still accelerating in October.

For Apps, the AI App revenue-growth ranking showed greater volatility:

The median month-over-month growth rate was approximately 11.5%;

The maximum came from Chuangkit AI, whose month-over-month growth reached 20.2 times the prior-month base (2020%, as printed in the ranking table), clearly an extreme case of one-time expansion;

Other leading products included AI Baby Generator for image generation, Suno for music generation, Animal Jam for emotional companionship, AI Chatbot - Ask Me Anything, Grok, Xiaoyuan Kousuan, Claude, Grammarly, and Xinghui. The signal here is:

On the one hand, App breakouts are more dramatic, but they can be strongly affected by a single factor such as a version update, paid acquisition strategy, or channel recommendation. On the other hand, after removing extreme values, the pace of mainstream growth products on Apps resembles that on the Web: most are gradually rising within a 10%-20% range, accumulating scale through stable retention and continuous scenario expansion.

At the top, even a giant such as ChatGPT remained strong in the growth ranking:

Its Web month-over-month growth was approximately 22%, while its App growth was about 12%. Its enormous scale simply placed it in the middle or lower reaches when ranked by growth. This structure of steady growth among giants plus high volatility among middle-tier products indicates that the AI application layer has entered a relatively mature cycle. The period when everyone doubled together in a frenzy has ended, replaced by competition over meticulous operations and depth within scenarios.

Graphic-only notes: The bar charts in Images 1, 3, 4 and 6 repeat the accompanying table’s product order and rounded annual revenues in USD millions. Image 0 is a conceptual infographic repeating the article’s 72%, 51%, 69%, approximately 76% and 25% concentration/channel claims. The Web growth scatter plot in Image 2 does not match its own ranking table: its clearly legible separate labels include Dippy (numeric label 1.03, plotted between 500% and 600%), Cohere (22.64, between 200% and 300%), Mercor (36.19, between 100% and 200%) and Framer (12.96, near 200%). Additional readable product labels include Knowt, Astria, Syllaby, manus and AIEASE AI; a label beginning “Study” and several lower-left labels/values overlap in the original and cannot be fully recovered. The plot’s horizontal axis runs from USD 0 million to USD 600 million and its vertical axis from 0% to 700%; the numeric labels are not assigned a metric by a visible legend. We preserve this mismatch rather than replace its labels with the table’s October leaders. The App growth scatter plot in Image 5 runs from USD 0 million to USD 120 million horizontally and −500% to 2500% vertically; clear labels include Chuangkit AI (0.17), AI Baby Generator (0.19), Grok (0.27), Claude (0.41), Suno (0.61), Donna (0.56), InStories (0.92), Translate Now (4.18) and Saylo (0.14). Many central labels overlap in the source; its fully legible table, reproduced above, preserves the named products and all exact tabulated values. No hidden or obscured source label has been invented.

04. Research Statement

4.1 Data Notes

The AI product revenue data in this report, article, ranking, or chart is based on real-time tracking of referral traffic from AI product websites to payment gateways such as Stripe. Combined with time-series analysis, it examines historical traffic, fluctuations in monthly active users, and changes in pricing strategies to construct a dynamic revenue-estimation model. The model's core parameters are determined through a three-part validation system comprising monitoring of paid-conversion funnels, reverse calibration against company disclosures, and comparison with industry-benchmark conversion rates; they are also promptly compared and corrected against company financial reports, financing announcements, and disclosures from authoritative media. Sampling validation indicates that the mean absolute error between predictions and actual data remains within ±10%, meeting industry-research accuracy standards.

The AI product traffic data in this report, article, ranking, or chart is based on multisource data integration and processing through Unique Research's proprietary algorithms. Monitoring is strictly limited to users' direct access through official applications and websites. Specifically, the data covers only direct user access to AI products through websites and native applications. It excludes traffic generated through browser plugins or extensions, desktop client software, the WeChat and Alipay mini-program ecosystems, embedded services on third-party platforms such as Discord, localized deployments of open-source models, API calls, and other forms of indirect access. The data focuses on direct usage of AI products through their core user endpoints to objectively reflect direct access behavior on mainstream user devices.

Given the complexity and dynamic nature of data collection and processing, as well as continual changes in the market environment, the displayed data may contain some degree of error and omission. The data should therefore be treated as a research and analytical reference that offers a window into the AI product market, rather than as a definitive basis for making specific investment strategies or providing consulting advice.

Data-Coverage Expansion Notes:

We are actively developing and testing monitoring models for the following emerging fields, which are expected to be gradually incorporated into future quarterly reports:

The AI agent ecosystem, or Agents

Sales and active usage of AI hardware

Estimates of API call volumes for foundation models

4.2 Definitions

• Geographic Dimension

Overseas AI products: products founded by entrepreneurs or teams who are not ethnically Chinese and launched primarily for global markets, including but not limited to their home markets.

Domestic AI products: products founded by entrepreneurs or teams of Chinese nationality and launched primarily for China's domestic market.

Chinese AI products going global: products founded by ethnically Chinese entrepreneurs or teams but positioned primarily for overseas markets outside mainland China.

• Functional Dimension

AI-native applications: applications that deeply integrate artificial-intelligence technologies and algorithms from the start of product design, and whose core value, business processes, or user experience depend entirely on AI. These applications do not merely use AI to optimize or enhance existing functions; AI is their core component, without which the applications would cease to exist or lose their essential value.

AI-enabled applications: applications that integrate or embed AI into an existing business logic and application framework to enhance existing functions or provide entirely new ones. These applications may already have had mature business models and market positioning, but introducing AI enables them to improve efficiency significantly, improve the user experience, or create new value.

AI-ecosystem applications: platform applications that support, connect, or facilitate exchange among the developers, application builders, service providers, end users, and other participants who make up the AI ecosystem. They extend beyond the technical layer to markets, communities, resource sharing, and other dimensions, with the objective of promoting adoption, innovation, and cooperation in AI.

4.3 Metric Notes

• WEB Data Metrics

Visits: the total number of visits to a website within a specified period, such as one month, used to measure traffic scale. Page views during a continuous active period count as the same session, while renewed activity after an interval of more than 30 minutes or the beginning of a new day counts as a new visit, thereby measuring website traffic and visitor activity comprehensively and accurately.

Unique Visitors: the number of unique IP addresses that visit the target website within a specified period, such as one month. If someone visits a website on multiple days within one month, the person is counted as only one unique visitor.

ARR, or subscription revenue: the total revenue generated by a website in a given period, such as 1 year, by providing subscription services to users. It excludes advertising revenue, transaction commissions, professional services, and other one-time revenue.

• APP Data Metrics

Downloads: the number of times an App is downloaded within a specified period, such as one month. It is generally measured as the number of downloads of a single App from application stores such as the App Store and Google Play stores. Downloads measure an App's popularity and ability to attract users and can also reflect the effects of promotion and marketing activities.

Active Users: the number of unique users who perform at least one activity within a specified period, such as one month. Active Users measure user scale, engagement, and activity within a specific period.

IAP, or in-app purchase revenue: revenue from purchases made by users inside an App to obtain virtual goods, additional services, premium functions, and similar items. It excludes advertising revenue, direct user payments such as gratuities, and revenue from third-party Android application stores.

Appendix: Summary of Quarterly Trend Insights

First, anyone still debating whether to build a "general-purpose chat product" should examine revenue concentration.

In the global sample, two products captured most chatbot revenue. Relying merely on "a slightly better experience" or "a slightly newer model" to grow from zero to hundreds of millions of dollars in this red ocean is far harder than it was several years ago. The more realistic question is whether a team can build a "conversational tool with professional capabilities" for a specific industry or workflow rather than another general-purpose chat window.

Second, structurally, opportunities remain denser in "tool-oriented scenarios."

Video generation, image editing, writing, enhanced search, knowledge management, marketing automation, and educational assistance repeatedly appear in these revenue and growth rankings. They represent scenarios with clear tasks and quantifiable value: it is often possible to calculate directly why users pay, whom they are willing to pay, and how much time or cost a purchase saves them.

For startup teams, the stories behind these scenarios may be less "grand," but their paths to cash flow are shorter and more verifiable, making them better suited to focused development over the next 1 or 2 years.

Third, the strengths and weaknesses of Chinese teams are already written in the data.

The strength lies in images, video, beauty effects, photo enhancement, cameras, and short-video editing. Chinese products going global have already built clear advantages in these areas. From KLING AI and HeyGen to Hypic, PictureThis, Airbrush, and BeautyPlus, they demonstrate that the "content tools + globalization" model can generate revenue in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

The weakness is that Chinese products still hold a limited share of global revenue in general chat, enterprise collaboration, knowledge management, and developer tools. No single product has yet emerged that can directly compare with ChatGPT or Claude in cash-flow terms.

Fourth, channel strategy must be designed around market differences rather than copied wholesale.

Revenue in China's domestic market is roughly evenly split between the Web and Apps. This means that for products serving primarily domestic users, mobile remains a primary channel requiring meticulous operations. For prosumer and enterprise users overseas, however, the Web is often the more important revenue entry point. Pricing, feature packaging, promotion cadence, and team configuration should all be designed around this reality rather than simply copying one UI across platforms.

Fifth, from a growth perspective, turning points often emerge among middle-tier products.

Whether Web tools such as PixVerse, VIGGLE, and KoalaWriter or Apps such as Suno, Chuangkit AI, Xiaoyuan Kousuan, and Xinghui, their real acceleration generally occurs after a particular specialized scenario has been refined until it works smoothly—not because of a one-time campaign or a trending topic.

For product teams, this is a reminder not to become obsessed too early with expanding functions horizontally, but first to refine the workflow they genuinely do best to an exceptional standard. For investors, these fast-growing middle-tier products reveal more about the new directions of AI applications over the next 2 or 3 years than the leading giants do.
