📊 a16z just released the 5th edition of its “Top 100 GenAI Consumer Apps” list, and while it’s generating buzz, we noticed a subtle but critical gap:
On the Web ranking, you won’t find Baidu AI Search, Fotor, or Tencent Yuanbao.
On the App ranking, several Chinese AI apps appear under-ranked compared to their actual market performance.
This isn’t because these products “aren’t good enough,” but because of data source limitations. a16z’s Web data comes from Similarweb, and its mobile data from Sensor Tower—which mainly tracks iOS and Google Play. That naturally misses most of China’s third-party Android markets, not to mention HarmonyOS’s independent distribution.
At UNIQUE RESEARCH, we published our own August 2025 AI Web Traffic & MAU Rankings, built from multiple third-party sources and our proprietary algorithms. Our dataset covers monthly visits, active users, and growth rates across both Chinese and global Web AI products—painting a picture closer to market reality and shining light on Chinese apps overlooked by a16z.

Some highlights from our growth leaders:
Claude: 150M visits (+18.6%)
Google AI Studio: 99.1M (+12.5%)
SeaArt AI: 30.4M (+12.7%)
Qwen: 28.4M (+10.9%)
Doubao: 74.3M (+9.0%)
Grammarly: 52.5M (+8.2%)
NotebookLM: 63.8M (+8.0%)
Baidu AI Search: 36.8M (+33.9%)

🚀 Emerging standouts:
Joi AI: 10.35M MAU, up 79% MoM. Known for AI chat & virtual companions, now spreading rapidly across overseas social communities.
LMArena: 4.2M MAU, up 140%+, showing non-experts are also using it to benchmark LLMs.
Ourdream.ai: 8.38M MAU, up 26.7%, fueled by strong demand for AI companionship.
📈 “Going global” and “vertical focus” are key themes:
RoboNeo (Meitu): visits up 208%, one of the fastest-growing Chinese apps.
FacelessReels: an AI auto-video generator for overseas markets, traffic surged 1046% MoM.
MaxAI.me: top-3 in both traffic growth and MAU growth, showing habit-forming usage.
The real AI race is bigger than the 100 names on the a16z list. Our goal isn’t to discredit their ranking, but to fill in the blind spots—so the ecosystem sees the full picture. Many Chinese teams don’t show up in Google Play or have overseas PR muscle, but data doesn’t lie, and trends never arrive late.
